From measurements to net water volume, use this complete method without confusing outside dimensions with the water actually held by the pool.

What pool volume means
Pool volume is the amount of water held by the pool. One cubic metre equals 1,000 litres. A 40 m³ pool therefore holds about 40,000 litres at the measured waterline.
Gross volume describes the geometric shell. Net volume allows for steps, benches and sun shelves. Net volume is usually the useful figure for filling and water-care calculations.
Measurements to take
Measure length and width between the walls at the waterline, then measure water depth rather than the full wall height.
For a changing floor, record the length and start and end depths of every zone. For a free-form pool, take several widths or draw the outline to scale. Record the dimensions of steps and benches.
Calculation method
For a flat rectangular pool, multiply length, width and depth. For a regular slope, use the average of the minimum and maximum depths. Divide a complex pool into simple non-overlapping zones and add them.
- Calculate each floor zone.
- Add geometric volumes.
- Deduct submerged solid features.
- Add an external spa separately when relevant.
Checking the result
Compare the answer with a simple order-of-magnitude calculation and check every unit. A 0.2 m error in average depth across an 8 × 4 m pool changes the result by 6.4 m³.
During a complete fill, water-meter readings before and after are the best practical check if other water use is isolated.
Common mistakes
Typical mistakes include using outside dimensions, confusing shell depth with water depth, ignoring a slope, or applying an unexplained coefficient.
A volume result does not authorise automatic chemical dosing. Test the water and follow product labels and equipment manufacturer instructions.
